16:9 for YouTube, square for feeds, 9:16 for stories — or the source size.
Your footage never leaves your device.
A thumbnail has a fraction of a second to explain what a video is about. Use a clear frame, a face or a single focal point, and a title of three to six words. If the title repeats the video title word for word, it wastes the space.
Drag through the video and look for a moment with strong expression, motion or a clear subject. Avoid frames that are blurry or half-blinked. The six key frames are a quick way to see the range before you scrub.
Bar adds a dark gradient behind the text, which is the safest choice over busy footage. Block puts the text on a solid colored strip. Outline draws a dark edge around bold letters. Clean uses a soft shadow only, best for calm images.
1280×720 (16:9) is the usual YouTube size. Square is better for feeds, and 9:16 for stories and vertical covers. Source keeps your original proportions. Keep important text away from the edges, because the platform puts its own labels and timestamps there.
JPG is smaller and usually enough for thumbnails; PNG is lossless and larger. Platforms often have file size limits, so check them before you upload.
